A Random Look at How Cannabis and Shrooms Interact in the Digestive System in the Context of Gigs

Now here's a thing. Recently I went to a gig, and took 2g of shrooms in capsules at around 7pm when we went in. But they didn't kick in for 4 hours. On the other hand, I recently took one capsule and it kicked in nicely within the hour. This made me think about the science.

Now, buckle up for some of that science.

Let's look first at what happens when you snarf some shrooms, whether whole or in capsules.

Let's assume you chew the whole ones well to increase the surface area. This speeds digestion. Caps already have pulverised shrooms, so not needed there.

When your shrooms reach the stomach, they're mixed with acid and enzymes to form a liquid mixture called chyme. That's basically what you puke up if you vomit.

This chyme gets squirted into the small intestine, where most of  the nutrients are extracted. After that, what's left goes into the large intestine, and we're not particularly concerned about its journey from then on.

Now, here's the thing.

The time taken for food (for that is what shrooms are, after all) to get to the small intestine can be anything from 20 mins to 6 hours. Much of the variation depends on the type of meal. A light snack will be nearer the 20 minute mark. Steak, eggs and chips are nearer the 6 hours. So here, it's time to introduce the first principle. Don't pig out before shrooms. A light snack, fruit, simple carbs like crackers, light soups, etc is OK. Opt for low fat versions throughout if you can. Your drink of choice should be water, but low or no alcohol drinks are OK as long as you take it easy. Shots etc are a really bad idea. Cannabis is also a poor choice before taking shrooms as it slows down the digestion. More of that later.

So, you've chowed down on the shrooms, and they're in your stomach, waiting to get into the small intestine where the magic starts to happen. You want to encourage the transfer of the shroomy chyme into your small intestine. If you can, go for a short walk. Alternatively, if you're going to a gig, take the shrooms on the walk to the gig. This will massage the contents of your stomach and encourage the chyme's transit into the small intestine.

Once you feel the shrooms kicking in, you can start your cannabis and/or alcohol if you wish
. But that's not advice to go crazy. The shrooms are now in your small intestine and you want to encourage the extraction of the psilocybin. Cannabis (preferably via a vape) will slow down your small intestine contractions significantly, allowing more time for the psilocybin extraction process. Alcohol works in the opposite direction to cannabis in this context, so this should be restricted - there are decent low alcohol drinks around now; but plain water is probably your friend here.

On another note, I find that cannabis and psilocybin are pretty good partners when taken together. I feel a synergistic effect, but like many things in this context your mileage may vary

And there we have it. A random chat about how to get the best from your psilocybin adventure.

Always remember to start low, take it slow. If it's your first time taking shrooms, I would try 1g first and work from there. And be careful. If nothing has happened after a couple of hours, I would advise not taking any more. Stick to the vape. Later, when sober, review what you did and when you did it and see if you can explain the lack of performance. Fix any issues and try again. But not too quickly.

Happy days. I wish you plenty of good trips :)
